Socks of Myself

Socks of Myself

By Mary Dezember

A Soft and Gentle Reminder
In the Spirit of Walt Whitman

I

Whenever I start to feel tired
and down,
I let my eyes gaze down, too,
for there I can gaze upon my socks
and their message that bolsters me
with a soft and gentle reminder
to “loafe and invite my soul,”
as brilliant Walt Whitman did.

Then, I slip on my loafers, stand,
and continue my awesome journey
embracing the sensuousness of the sky
and grass and day,
heeding the longings of my heart,
as “I celebrate myself”
in celebration of life.

NOTES:

Words in quotations are from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself,” from Leaves of Grass, 1855.

Book shown is a paperback reproduction, published by Cholla Needles, of the first edition of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, 1855.

I bought the socks several years ago from Target. They were from the company Made for Retail.
